wow. each time, i say i won't ignore the poor dying xanga that this is...and each time i never seem to keep up that promise. ANYWAY.....i think i'm just in a pensive mood. its hard to compare life to what it once was. although there are similarities, the changes made are definitely there. and they aren't just in me...they extend beyond what i can imagine and what i know yet.

have you ever ridden on a train? like a real one...one that went through all the backyard abandoned places that no one wants to see, one that weaves along the torrents of brown gushing water of a river forcing its way through a city that moves on without it; that has hemmed it in with cement walls tattooed with graffiti and poetry and bandaged with the tents of those who live there? have you ridden the tracks that sew warehouses together, that connect the piles of cardboard and truck trailers across lines, cities and states, that whiz by the rows of forklifts lined up in soldier-straight rows ready to move what will always be traveling? have you seen into backyards, the private spaces free of pressure to mow the lawn, where the bikes sit with streamers on the handles and a flat tire leaning against the concrete, through the maze of laundry hung out to dry but flapping in the tiny drops of rain no one can feel yet? blurred by the perpendicular lines of traffic across fields of freshness growing in the cloudy sun, stopped at depots that fade away into parking lots, into the arms of those waiting or into the car doors of those coming home from work? lumbered along the coast where the few build their homes and paint their garages with murals, stared at the driftwood huts on the beach built by the kids who wave fiercely at the train as it zooms by? seen the sun pierce through the layers of mist and fog onto the ripples of the evermoving ocean, crashing and tossing itself onto the sand 20 feet from your window? run parallel to the speeding treadmill of traffic, moving every whichway, going to each own destination while you are almost to yours? finally stopped, stepped off the train and glancing at it start off again, realize that it all happened whether you were there to see it or not?

this is the train i  rode yesterday. this is the train that moved me to where i had to be, away from what i know and did not know, towards what i know and do not. it is the train that took me from familiar to foreign, and back again. something about looking out a window always makes me philosophical....and i'm not sure if my thoughts are worth the read or not, but at least i'm reminded that there's always something to see.
